About the SIG

Welcome to the Phacilitate Automation SIG 2021

Phacilitate are delighted to be bringing you the fourth edition of the Automation SIG (Special Interest Group or Sunny Italian Gathering), which will take place in the summer of 2021 in beautiful Lake Maggiore, Italy.

Although the larger Automation SIG has been cancelled in 2020, the work of the automation community does not need to halt for the year. Find out about the 2020 Working Groups here.

We are still working on putting together the details of the 2021 meeting, however the goals and outcomes of the Automation SIG remain the same. Creating a year-round community of working groups, all with a specific goal to achieve which will provide tangible outcomes to drive change in this industry.

The Automation SIG was created to discuss and propose solutions to the major obstacles on the road to automating cell and gene therapy manufacturing.
It is a year-round special interest group which will kick off with the 2020 Working Groups, to be followed by a meeting at Advanced Therapies Week 2021 in Miami, then the Automation SIG in Italy in the summer of 2021.

At the 2021 SIG, the group will divide into 16 specialised working groups, each tasked with a specific objective that will be followed up on throughout the year. Why should you attend?

  • Find ways to solve challenges you cannot currently solve in manufacturing for a variety of reasons, but mostly because there is no existing precedent or technology
  • Understand how to make your manufacturing technology more efficient
  • Discuss how to streamline manufacturing and distribution on a global scale
  • To bounce ideas against people working on the same issues
  • To understand how the field will evolve in the next five years

Complex interactions, discussions and conversations with peers will allow you to really understand what's going on both in your organisation and in others. In the peer group discussions you will be able to validate ideas, challenges and solutions, and directly benefit from accumulated wealth of experience.

Each session will be led by a dedicated 'Rapporteur' who will be tasked with producing tangible outputs from the conversations, and who will then feed their findings back to the other groups in a 'feedback loop'.

These core sessions will be broken up by a mixture of structured and informal networking events, team building exercises (think highland games, treasure hunts, crystal mazes and crazy planes!) and a tech showcase, a small, carefully curated exhibition floor of new and innovative technology solutions to help people understand exactly what’s on offer. During this activity slot, attendees will go on a ‘tech tour’ of the exhibition where they have the opportunity to see a live demo and get answers to their tech and service questions.
